Regular check-ups that include dental cleanings and exams, help your child maintain optimal oral hygiene while helping to prevent tooth decay or disease. Often we miss spots of plaque during brushing or flossing, and regular dental visits are important for removing the plaque that can build up over time.
If your child is due for any x-rays their film will be taken as soon as you are brought back from reception. During your child’s visit we will begin by cleaning their teeth with a toothbrush and specially formulated prophy toothpaste. During this time we will talk to your child about what areas of their mouth they should focus on more during brushing, and educate them on the best methods of personal oral hygiene.
Afterward, the dentist will examine the mouth and teeth to check for cavities, signs of tooth decay, gum deficiencies, or spacing issues. If any follow-up care is required the dentist will explain this to you as well as any other concerns found.
After the exam the dentist will apply a fluoride varnish that strengthens teeth and enamel. Per the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, children should been seen once every six months.
